Rangers Suffer Champions League Heartbreak
The Rangers’ UEFA Champions League (UCL) journey came to an abrupt end after a 2-0 defeat to Dynamo Kyiv at Hampden Park Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland, on Tuesday, 13 August.
Rangers started warmly, with Cyriel Dessers and Ross McCausland both having early chances, but the game turned after Jefte received a second yellow card and was dismissed. With only ten men, the 20-year-old Brazilian winger’s team were left at a numerical disadvantage for the rest of the second half.
The call had Teddy Bears’ manager Philippe Clement fuming: “This is the worst decision I have seen in more than 30 years of football.”
Despite a spirited response from Rangers, Kyiv capitalised on their greater numbers with late goals from Oleksandr Pikhalyonok and Nazar Voloshyn, sealing their place in the next round. The defeat – which resulted in a 3-1 aggregate loss – means Rangers drop into the Europa League group stage for a second consecutive season.
Red Bull Salzburg and Lille also secured their places in the UCL play-offs, with Lille edging out Fenerbahce in a tense extra-time battle.
